In recognition of Jawaharlal Nehru, the nation’s first prime minister, the day is also observed. Children affectionately referred to him as “Chacha Nehru” and he fervently supported a comprehensive education for children. Nehru regarded children as the bedrock of society and the true fortitude of a nation. Children’s Day is customarily observed throughout India through the organization of motivational and educational programs exclusively designed for children.

Facts About Children’s Day

On November 14, 1889, India’s inaugural Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was born into a Kashmiri Brahman family. His family, renowned for their erudition and prowess in administration, had relocated to Delhi in the early eighteenth century. His father, the illustrious barrister and leader of the Indian independence movement Motilal Nehru, was his biological father. Nehru later became a prominent associate of Mahatma Gandhi. Jawaharlal was the firstborn of four children, with two of his siblings being female. Later, Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit, a sister, was elected the first female president of the General Assembly of the United Nations.

It is hypothesized that children referred to Nehru as “Chacha Nehru” due to his conviction that children constituted the backbone of India. Conversely, an alternative account has it that the former prime minister was referred to as “chacha” due to his intimate association with Gandi, universally known as “Bapu.” Consequently, the populace dubbed Jawaharlal Nehru “chacha” due to the perception that he was the junior sibling of the nation’s father.

Narendra Modi assumed a leadership role in India’s independence movement in 1947, with Gandhi serving as his mentor. He established the groundwork for an autonomous India that was democratic, socialist, secular, and sovereign. In light of this, Nehru is considered the progenitor of contemporary India.

In 1964, following the demise of Jawaharlal Nehru, the parliament unequivocally approved a resolution honoring him by designating the anniversary of his birth as the official Children’s Day. Prior to 1956, India observed Children’s Day annually on November 20, the date that the United Nations had designated Universal Children’s Day in 1954. Since that time, November 14 has been observed annually as Children’s Day in India, in observance of the first prime minister of the nation’s birthday.

Schools now coordinate enjoyable and motivational events to observe Children’s Day. Numerous individuals prepare speeches for Children’s Day.
