Children’s Hospice Day 2024: Background, Activities and Facts about Children’s Healthcare

Germany celebrates Children's Hospice Day, recognizing the vital role hospice plays in providing support and assistance to children with life-threatening illnesses.

Children’s Hospice Day 2024: February 10th is Children’s Hospice Day, celebrated annually in Germany. A child with a life-threatening illness endures years of severe physical and psychological strain on both the youngster and those close to them. In certain cases, children may even require hospice care, which can be particularly upsetting.

Children in these situations require as much assistance and company as they can get. Children’s Hospice Day raises awareness of the value of children’s hospice care in Germany as well as the medical professionals who provide outstanding care. Volunteers are highly empathetic and actively involved in providing care and support to children and young adults with life-threatening illnesses and their loved ones.

The Background of Children’s Hospice Day

Children have been taken care of at home since ancient times, usually by female family members. The first pediatric hospital in Paris, the Hôpital des Enfants Malades, opened its doors in 1802. For the first time, children’s needs and health conditions were formally recognized as distinct from those of adults. Germany, Italy, Poland, Austria, Russia, and England were later countries to adopt the concept of independent pediatric hospitals.

Madame Henry, the Chief Midwife, established the Port Royale program for newborns who were ill in 1893. She realized that babies needed special care and established distinct sections for their treatment. This was an experiment in neonatal care. In two significant human rights declarations published in 1924 and 1948, the United Nations established children’s rights in the 20th century. Children, they claimed, should receive more attention and care.

The fundamental rights of all children, including the right to the greatest medical care available, are recognized in almost all nations. Drs. Cicely Saunders and Elisabeth Kübler-Ross developed and pioneered the current hospice movement in the 1960s. Both of them understood the comprehensive demands of a critically ill patient. Physician assistance was used to open the first hospices. Drs. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, Saunders, and Wald together established the framework that led to the development of children’s hospice care in both Europe and the United States. The children’s hospice movement emerged as a distinct entity from the broader hospice movement during the 1970s, a period that came to be known as the “pivot of change.”
