At dawn on July 26, 1953, Fidel Castro commanded an army of 136 guerilla fighters he had personally trained in an assault on the Moncada Barracks. The military revolt of the Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista precipitated the siege, which had been planned for a year.
The Commemoration of the Assault on Moncada is observed on July 25 to commemorate the commencement of the Cuban Revolution, which began with a failed assault on the Moncada Barracks in Cuba’s second-largest city, Moncada. The incident, which played a significant role in bringing Fidel Castro to national prominence, contributed to the fall of the Batista dictatorship six years later. Present-day Cubans recall the day as one of the most significant turning points in their nation’s history and pay tribute to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the pursuit of freedom.
At dawn on July 26, 1953, Fidel Castro commanded an army of 136 guerilla fighters he had personally trained in an assault on the Moncada Barracks. The military revolt of the Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista precipitated the siege, which had been planned for a year. The assault was thwarted by a lack of weapons and communication breakdowns. However, the elites received an important message: Castro and his rebels, a diverse group of Africans, Cubans, and biracial citizens with an average age of 26, had shaken the empire.
In the aftermath of the attack, more than a dozen insurgents were executed, which was bittersweet for them. A small number of survivors, including Castro, were subsequently apprehended and imprisoned. Although Castro was found guilty after a lengthy trial, his speech, “History Will Absolve Me,” made headlines across the island and sparked nationalism in thousands of people, transforming him into a national hero. In 1955, as fractures appeared in the Batista Empire, the dictator attempted to salvage his reputation by releasing Castro and the other insurgents. This marked the beginning of Castro’s unparalleled rise to power in Cuba.
Castro highlighted the Commemoration of the Assault on Moncada, also known as the July 26 Movement, as the first move in overthrowing Cuba’s oppressive dictatorship and foreign influence on its leadership. It is part of the three-day celebrations of Cuba’s National Revolution Day, which take place from July 25 to July 27.
During the assault on the Moncada Barracks, nineteen mutineers were slain.
Due to their participation in the Moncada attack, Fidel and Ral Castro were imprisoned for 22 months.
The mothers of the prisoners launched a joint appeal to free the imprisoned rebels.
The iconic “History Will Absolve Me” speech by Fidel Castro inspired countless to join his cause.
Castro sailed to Mexico City after his release from prison to meet Che Guevara.
