Annually, Community Manager Appreciation Day is observed on the fourth Monday of January. It was founded in 2010 by Jeremiah Owyang to recognise the achievements of community managers worldwide. A community manager’s life consists of continual monitoring, dialogue after conversation, and content development. There is a proverb that states, “Social media never sleeps and neither do community managers.” Therefore, on this day, community managers and merchants in the social media marketplace are honoured with blog posts recognising their hard work and dedication.

HISTORY OF COMMUNITY MANAGER APPRECIATION DAY

Some of you may be thinking, “What is a community manager exactly?” It is a very recent term. The earliest documented origin of the role dates back only to the 1990s. Originally referred to as Sysops, this position arose as online systems introduced features and services that enabled the establishment of communities. Sysops were responsible for the operation of bulletin boards in software systems and the expansion of popular online computer services such as Prodigy and America Online. These communities went by a variety of titles, but Special Interest Groups was the most common designation. Community Leaders was a common designation for their leaders.

Each Network serves a purpose, and it is the Community Manager’s responsibility to maintain concentration. As online communities have grown, so have the Community Manager’s responsibilities. They are accountable for branded online communities, online research communities, corporate blogs, social media marketing, and research-related endeavours. Today, developers are expected to have a broader range of duties and skill sets, including product support and development, public relations, and customer service, all while keeping open communication with the community.

Community managers are concerned with building a group of individuals who share an admiration for a particular product. They are also committed to helping improve their product; they are the one that listens to the fan base, reports back to the higher-ups, and convinces them to pay attention. Their entire mission is to connect people and provide them with something they desire. Community managers enable personalization, cultivate relationships, and empower customers, which we believe is a noble endeavour.

Someone who defends the underdogs unquestionably merits a day of recognition. Therefore, if you are a member of an online community, be sure to acknowledge your community management and express your gratitude.
