After graduating from Yangchenphug High School, King Khesar attended Phillips Academy in Andover and Cushing Academy in Ashburnham in the United States. Following his attendance at Wheaton College in Massachusetts, he graduated from Magdalen College, Oxford, with a Diplomatic Studies Programme.
Following the abdication of his father, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, on December 9, 2006, he ascended to the monarchy. The date of his formal coronation was November 1, 2008.
The youthful monarch commenced his reign by presiding over parliamentary sessions, during which important matters such as land reform, electoral regulations, and more were deliberated. He asserted that the current generation of Bhutanese was obligated to guarantee the triumph of democracy.
