In the 1200s, individuals in Europe began using buttons to attach pieces of fabric. Later, as a result of the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century, machines took over the production of buttons, making them more slick and crisp and, most significantly, in larger quantities so that they were soon affordable to the masses.

The prevalence of buttons increased in the 20th century. Their production and demand increased, allowing them to enter every household. Today, buttons are found on a variety of garments and serve both practical and aesthetic purposes.
