The Guernsey cow Nellie Jay, also known as Elm Farm Ollie, was flown from Bismarck, Missouri, aboard a Ford Trimotor plane to the International Aviation Show in St. Louis on February 18, 1930, as part of a scientific experiment to determine whether altitude affects a cow’s ability to produce milk. Ollie was selected due solely to her reputation as a calm, high-milk-producing cow.

Before the milking procedure on the 72-mile trip over Missouri, paper milk cartons were dropped to onlookers on parachutes to generate publicity.
