Cow Produced Milk While Flying on an Aircraft Elm Farm Ollie, owned by Elsworth W. Bunce, was the first cow to be flown and milked in an aeroplane.

Cow Produced Milk While Flying on an Aircraft The 18th of February is observed yearly to honour the day Nellie Jay, subsequently renamed Elm Farm Ollie, became the first cow to be flown and milked in an aeroplane. The occurrence was part of a scientific investigation into the relationship between cows’ height and their ability to produce milk. Ollie’s milk was placed in paper cartons and parachuted to onlookers during a 72-mile trip over Bismarck, Missouri in an effort to gain notoriety. The voyage was also intended to demonstrate the capabilities of the newly produced Ford Trimotor aircraft, which had just begun arriving in 1925.

HISTORY OF COW MILKED WHILE FLYING IN AN AIRPLANE DAY

Cow Produced Milk While Flying on an Aircraft Elm Farm Ollie, owned by Elsworth W. Bunce, was the first cow to be flown and milked in an aeroplane. The Guernsey cow Nellie Jay, also known as Elm Farm Ollie, was flown from Bismarck, Missouri, aboard a Ford Trimotor plane to the International Aviation Show in St. Louis on February 18, 1930, as part of a scientific experiment to determine whether altitude affects a cow’s ability to produce milk. Ollie was selected due solely to her reputation as a calm, high-milk-producing cow.

Before the milking procedure on the 72-mile trip over Missouri, paper milk cartons were dropped to onlookers on parachutes to generate publicity. In addition, the journey was intended to demonstrate the capabilities of the newly manufactured Ford Trimotor aircraft, which had just begun shipping in 1925. The goal of the flight, according to historians, was to demonstrate to farmers that farm animals may be transported by air and milked en route.

Yet, observers in the agricultural industry noticed that the practise of transporting livestock via air freight as opposed to by land never completely caught on. Cow Milked While Flying in an Aircraft Day was established on February 18 as a result of the consensus that Ollie the cow’s accomplishments merit commemoration and periodic recognition.
