The background of Crayola Crayon Day

Crayola pastels were introduced in Easton, Pennsylvania, in 1903. Binney & Smith Company created a child-safe, affordable, and non-toxic coloured stick that was both durable and inexpensive. Alice Binney, the wife of Edwin Binney, coined the name Crayola by combining the French terms ‘craie’ (meaning ‘chalk’) and ‘oleaginous’ (meaning ‘oily’). The original Crayola set was referred to as No. 51, Young Artists’ Drawing Crayons for Coloring Maps and Pictures. There were a total of 28 colours utilized, including celestial blue, golden ochre, rose pink, and burnt sienna.

Over time, simpler hues gained popularity while more intricate hues were phased out. In 1910, the colours celestial blue, golden ochre, rose pink, and burnt sienna were discontinued. In 1914, purple and violet crayons were separated, and in 1915, gold, silver, and copper were removed from the lineup.

In 1926, when Binney & Smith acquired the Munsell Color Company’s colouring method, Crayola crayons became ubiquitous. This was the first time they applied the colour wheel concept to their crayons, which consisted of the five fundamental hues red, yellow, green, and blue. In 1930, they introduced six intermediate colors, including red-orange, yellow-orange, yellow-green, blue-green, blue-violet, and red-violet, as well as orange. This eventually evolved into the 12-color case. They added black, neutral gray, white, and brown to produce a palette with sixteen colours. In contrast, Munsell Crayola cartons were discontinued in 1935 due to wartime shortages. Despite this, the Munsell colour scheme was an integral part of the Crayola corporation until 1990. There are approximately 120 crayon colours available today, and they are all derived from the fundamental colours.
