Culturama Day in Saint Kitts and Nevis 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

Culturama is the festival to attend in St. Kitts and Nevis between the end of Carnival in February and March and Sugar Mas, which occurs annually between Christmas and New Year's.

Saint Kitts and Nevis observes Culturama annually on the Tuesday following the first Monday of August. This year’s date is August 8. This festival highlights the cultural history of the islands and extends the Emancipation Day celebrations by one day. Even though there are numerous events in the Caribbean, this one stands out.

On this public holiday, most public offices, institutions, and businesses are closed. It is also a public holiday, permitting everyone to participate in the celebrations. Even though the festival is held annually in August, celebrations typically commence at the end of July and continue throughout August.

The background of Culturama Day

Culturama is the festival to attend in St. Kitts and Nevis between the end of Carnival in February and March and Sugar Mas, which occurs annually between Christmas and New Year’s.

The first occurrence was in 1974. After meeting the Nevis Dramatic and Cultural Society (NEDACS) in February 1974, Culturama was conceived.

In 1974, NEDACS lamented the lack of traditional performance troupes at the Christmas celebration. They responded by creating a new festival to promote and commemorate Nevisian culture. The festival was dubbed “Culturama,” and the date was fixed for the weekend of August Emancipation.

After a difficult period in the middle of the 1980s, Culturama has become a significant event on the calendar. Cultarama strives to maintain its original mission of promoting indigenous culture and tradition through many of its programmes, although it may be difficult for outsiders to distinguish the festival from other Caribbean carnivals.

During Culturama, Nevisians annually celebrate their heritage. It is Nevis’ answer to the numerous carnivals conducted on other Caribbean islands. It is held annually in early August to honour Nevisians who have returned home to celebrate with friends and family. It is a commemoration and observance of cultural traditions. Every night there is music, parties, culinary fairs, and concerts, all leading up to the early morning march through Charlestown’s downtown.

You can also appreciate colourful pageants, dancing, poetry, and folk music. The day concludes with a march through throngs of spectators from all over the globe.
