In Kosovo, their flag day is currently a national holiday. This day is dedicated to reducing discrimination against the Ashakali group and boosting their children’s education. Join us in speaking out against racial, ethnic, and religious prejudice against others on this day.
Kosovo is one of the newest nations in the world. However, the region in which it is located has a significant amount of history. Vinca, a Neolithic archaeological civilisation, was the first to inhabit Kosovo’s territories. After 4000 B.C., Kosovo was ruled by numerous empires. The territory was occupied for several centuries prior to the Roman invasion, but Rome quickly lost control of the province and political unrest remained.
After 1400 A.D., the region’s architecture blossomed, and numerous monasteries testified to the splendour of the era’s artisans. The subsequent years were marked by Ottoman and Serbian authority. The region also seen Crusader and Ottoman troops battle. The conflicts led to the besieging of Constantinople in 1453 and the Ottoman conquest of the Balkans.
The Ottomans maintained control over the region until the 1890s. During this age, nationalism started to grow in Kosovo. 1897 saw the Revolt in Kosovo against Ottoman authority. The Kosovo area changed hands multiple times until declaring its independence in 2008. Although supported by European and American powers, the nation nonetheless faced domestic challenges. Communities such as Ashakalia are still subject to discrimination. Ashakalia Day was created to end discrimination and provide equitable educational and career opportunities. Due to the paucity of research, the Ashakali community is still the subject of contention. However, their struggle continues, and this day will help them receive the deserved international attention.
