Day of La Rioja is an annual public holiday honoured on June 9 in La Rioja, Spain. It commemorates the approval of the La Rioja autonomous community’s constitution in 1982. This picturesque region is renowned for its delicious red wine and features more than 500 wineries. We genuinely believe that there is no such thing as an excessive number of wineries, but 500 sounds reasonable. The day is commemorated with gusto in the region by organising a variety of events, including exhibitions of works by local artists, traditional and modern music concerts, sporting events, and, of course, the preparation of delicious dishes and the consumption of the world-renowned La Rioja wine.

The background of Day of La Rioja

La Rioja’s history is marked by territorial conflicts and incursions. During Roman times, the territory of La Rioja was inhabited by the Berones, Autrigones, and Vascones; during the Middle Ages, it was frequently contested territory. Following the Muslim Invasion of 711, La Rioja fell under the control of Al Andalus. This was followed by additional conflicts and invasions, which were then followed by — you guessed it — additional conflicts and invasions.

In the nineteenth century, the territory was divided between the municipalities of Burgos and Soria. Even France had an opinion. During the Peninsular War, Napoleonic forces seized control of the region, retaining it for the French until 1814.

Historically, La Rioja was a part of various provinces in the region, but in 1833 it became its own province. It was dubbed the Logroo Province. The province’s name was changed to La Rioja in 1980, although Logroo remains the capital.

With over 300,000 people, this community is the least populous region in Spain today. Additionally, it has a flag consisting of the colours red, white, green, and yellow. The residents of this region are extremely proud of their home. In the region, other events, such as the Vendimia Riojana, are also celebrated. Logroo celebrates the grape harvest in the third week of September with a parade of waggons and bullfights.
