Day of Remembrance and Respect to Victims of the Communist Regime 2024: Bulgaria observes the Day of Remembrance and Respect to Victims of the Communist Regime on February 1st of each year. The tyrannical regime in Bulgaria unfairly imprisoned and killed many people, so the government decided to declare it a permanent reminder of these horrible acts and to honor their memory. Since it’s not a public holiday, companies are open as usual. Nonetheless, wreaths are hung at Sofia’s memorial wall in observance of the day, and memorial church services are hosted, featuring remarks from politicians.

History of the Day of Remembrance and Respect to Victims of the Communist Regime

The Bulgarian Communist Party, which seized power in 1944, is largely to blame for the country’s terrible past. Widespread political repression followed as the party advanced to assert its total control over the Bulgarian people. The creation of the “People’s Court,” which operated beyond the bounds of the Bulgarian Constitution, was one of the instruments they employed to accomplish this. This unlawful organization served as “a communist terror instrument.”

The People’s Court sentenced regents, parliamentarians, generals, cabinet ministers, colonels, and financiers to death on February 1, 1945, and they were all executed that same day. The Court proceeded to try individuals who were purportedly associated with the former administration in the months that followed these heinous murders. Approximately 2,730 people were put to death, 1,305 received life sentences, and over 9,000 received sentences. Many others just “disappeared” without ever being put on trial, leaving thousands of people interred in unmarked graves. On Belene Island, the Belene Labor Camp was founded in 1949 to imprison “enemies of the regime,” particularly evangelical Christian preachers. Official operations of this awful camp continued until 1959.

This brutal tyranny came to an end in November 1989, and parliamentary democracy was peacefully ushered in. The Supreme Court reversed the 1945 sentences in 1996 because there was insufficient evidence to convict the accused. Furthermore, the Bulgarian Constitutional Court ruled in 1998 that the People’s Court was unconstitutional.
