The Day of Songun is a North Korean holiday celebrated annually on August 25. This celebration commemorates the beginning of Kim Jong-il’s military-first regime. Since the country’s inception in 1948, the Kim family has ruled North Korea as its governing family. Songun accords the highest priority to military personnel, thereby reinforcing the Korean People’s Army (KPA)’s position in resource allocation and state affairs. The background of Day of Songun

Songun, which translates to’military-first,’ has been North Korea’s guiding principle for nearly six decades. On the other hand, its origins can be traced back to the anti-Japanese conflict of the 1930s, when Kim Il-sung was in power and North Korea’s founder.

After visiting the Seoul Ryu Kyong Su Guards and 105th Tank Division with his father, Kim Jong-il, his son and successor, created the Songun concept. During the Korean War, this division was one of the significant advances from Seoul to Taejon (Daejeon), so it has historical significance for the nation.

Upon his visit to the tank division, Kim Jong-il devised the military-first system to categorise each citizen into three broad categories, with the military and the Korean People’s Army (K.P.A.) receiving priority. He believed that all societal problems could be resolved by giving priority to military affairs.

In an effort to balance the efforts of the current ruling party, the Workers’ Party of Korea (W.P.K. ), and the Korean People’s Army (K.P.A. ), which was the ruling party in all previous eras, the concept appears to have lost significance over time and under the leadership of Kim Jong-un. The term is now also used to refer to anything deemed ‘excellent.’ Moreover, as the living conditions of military personnel deteriorate, the Day of Songun has become merely another day commemorating Kim Jong-il’s person and life.
