Chile's Day of the Glories of the Army became an official holiday in 1915 to honour the valiant individuals who fought in the nation's battles and defended the nation.
The Day of the Glories of the Army is a Chilean national holiday observed on September 19 as the culmination of the nation’s Independence Day festivities on September 18. Since 1819, all of Chile’s armed forces, including the Chilean Navy, Chilean Air Force, and Carabineros de Chile, have participated in the parade. Since a law was enacted in 1915, the event, held annually in Santiago’s O’Higgins Park, has been a legal holiday. It is also the anniversary of the 1810 inauguration of the First Government Junta, which saw the nation’s first military procession in Santiago.
Chile’s Day of the Glories of the Army became an official holiday in 1915 to honour the valiant individuals who fought in the nation’s battles and defended the nation. While Chile was under Spanish rule, a military parade was conducted in Santiago whenever a new governor-general took office. On September 19, 1810, the city hosted the formal inauguration of the First Government Junta and the first military procession of the new nation.
On September 28, 1819, an army parade commemorating the victory in the Chilean War of Independence was conducted. In 1831, President Joaquin Prieto ordered a military exercise on the La Pampilla fields, and in 1842, President Manuel Bulnes acquired land in the Pampilla region for annual military parades, resulting in its metamorphosis into a military installation in 1845. It was transformed into O’Higgins Park in 1873 due to the efforts of Luis Cousio, who was inspired by European parks and decided to incorporate Chilean elements into a similar design. Arana included the Field of Mars, which has been utilised in subsequent annual military demonstrations.
The parade has been conducted consistently, even after the tragedies of 1910, with the addition of the Air Force and the Carabineros de Chile in subsequent years.
