Day of the National Flag 2023: Date, History, Facts about Ukraine

The Day of the National Flag is observed annually on August 23 in Ukraine. The emblem is one of the country’s national symbols. This is a flag with the precise geometric — typically rectangular — form and a unique hue. The colours of a flag reflect national traditions and designate a particular region.

This holiday was created to honour the centuries-long history of Ukrainian state development, the state symbols of an independent Ukraine, and to educate the public on the importance of respecting national symbols.

The background of Day of the National Flag

After the 1991 proclamation of Ukraine’s independence, national symbols such as the anthem, flag, and coat of arms began to protect the state’s independence and sovereignty.

Researchers of Ukrainian history determined that these two hues, blue and yellow, date back to the time of Kievan Rus. The use of yellow and blue on Ukrainian flags dates back to the country’s adoption of Christianity. Later periods witnessed a diversification of flag shapes, hues, and the addition of images and inscriptions. The evolution of the “Cossack” had a substantial impact on the Ukrainian flag. When the monarchs hired the “Cossacks” for military battles, they presented them with jewels, which the Cossacks kept and subsequently utilised. The flag of Zaporizhzhya represented the nation. The “Zaporizhzhya Sich Great Ensign” was crimson with a depiction of ‘White Archangel Michael’ on the front and a white Greek cross surrounded by golden heavens on the back. Additionally, Zaporizhzhia is the birthplace of the Ukrainian naval ensign.

In the latter half of the twentieth century, blue-yellow achieved national recognition and legal registration. There were isolated attempts to transport the Ukrainian flag. The issue of national symbols, specifically the flag, has raised democratic forces on multiple occasions. At the time of Ukraine’s proclamation of independence, the national blue-yellow flag was already flying over many Ukrainian cities and towns. Then, in July 1990, it was established in the “Verkhovna Rada” hall and moved to Khreshchatyk.

Thus, on September 4, 1991, following the proclamation of Ukraine’s independence, the national blue-yellow flag of Ukraine was flown above the “Verkhovna Rada”
