The background of Day of the Races

Colombia is bordered by the Caribbean Sea to the north, Panama to the northwest, Venezuela and Brazil to the east, and Peru and Ecuador to the southwest. It is home to the second-largest Spanish-speaking population in the globe. Inhabitants include the Muisca, Tairona, and Quimbaya, who have resided there since approximately 12,000 B.C. The Muisca had an advanced culture based on agriculture and the trade of cotton cloth, pottery, and metals. In 1499, many Spanish explorers, including Christopher Columbus and Alonso de Ojeda, arrived in the region, but the first settlement was not established until 1510. The settlers subjugated the indigenous people, stealing all their gold and jewels by 1538. Santa Fe de Bogotá became the capital of the new monarchy of Granada. Followed by nearly 250 years of Spanish rule.

In 1811, Cartagena declared its independence from Spanish rule, and Bogota shortly followed suit. In 1815, Spain attempted to regain control, but Venezuelan General Simon Bolivar led Colombian forces to victory in 1819. Colombia, which was a part of the United Provinces of New Granada, then declared its independence. After its defeat in 1835, Colombia became an independent nation.

From the 1960s to the 1990s, there was a great deal of military and political violence in the country. Since 2005, stability and security have improved substantially, resulting in substantial progress and economic expansion.
