Day of Trees 2023: Date, History, Facts about Trees

In 1805, the first modern celebration of Arbour Day took place in the small Spanish municipality of Villanueva de la Sierra.

Day of Trees is observed annually on April 29 in Colombia, and the holiday is celebrated by planting trees. This tradition dates back hundreds of years, to 1594 in the Spanish village of Mondoedo, and is celebrated as Arbour Day in countries around the globe. This village hosted the first arbour plantation festival in recorded history.

The background of Day of Trees

In 1805, the first modern celebration of Arbour Day took place in the small Spanish municipality of Villanueva de la Sierra. This initially Spanish custom rapidly spread throughout the world. The first Arbour Day in the United States was celebrated in Lincoln, Nebraska, on April 10, 1872, during the Nebraska State Board of Agriculture’s annual meeting. On that day, over one million trees were planted throughout the province. The celebration of Arbour Day quickly expanded to countries such as Japan, Canada, Australia, and Colombia.

This holiday, known as Day of Trees in Colombia, is significant to Colombians due to the country’s severe environmental problems. More than fifty countries around the world now observe Arbour Day in an effort to combat deforestation and the ensuing climate change.

The Arbour Day Foundation has helped organise, consolidate, and promote the observance of Arbour Day for more than five decades. Since its inception in 1972, the A.D.F. has collaborated with other organisations to maintain biodiversity in urban areas, combat deforestation, and aid in the recovery of trees that have been damaged. Individuals, communities, and organisations interested in advancing this cause can join the A.D.F. in its mission by participating in its membership programmes, fundraising initiatives, and community tree recovery plans. The option to contribute to the organisation is available throughout the entire year, not just around Arbour Day.
