According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), African Americans accounted for 44% of new HIV diagnoses in 2016. The same year, Latinos made up 24% of new diagnoses. People of color are also more likely to develop AIDS after becoming infected with HIV.
In light of these statistics, many organizations that observe Day Without Art have shifted their focus to raising awareness about the disproportionate impact HIV/AIDS has on communities of color. Some have also renamed the day “Day With(out) Art/Act Up.” ACT UP (AIDS Coalition To Unleash Power) is a grassroots organization that works to end the AIDS crisis through direct action and advocacy.
