On December 1, 1989, Day Without Art began. This idea came from Visual AIDS, a group started in 1988 by writer and art critic Robert Atkins and three curators: Gary Garrels, Thomas Sokolowski, and William Olander. Through national projects, Visual AIDS brought together people who work in the arts and people who have AIDS. One of these projects was Day Without Art.
It was meant to be both a day of mourning and action, with hundreds of art schools and organizations joining together to show how art can help bring about change. In the U.S., more than 800 art galleries, museums, and other organizations took down their displays and put up posters about HIV and safe sex in their place. Artists and curators held memorials and readings, as well as shows and exhibitions of visual arts.
