Death/Duty Day 2023: Death/Duty Day is observed annually on November 11. It honors those who lost their lives fighting for their countries and signifies the conclusion of World War I, one of the most destructive conflicts in history. The holiday commemorates the devastation caused by the First World War in order to prevent a recurrence of a similar conflict.

Death/Duty Day 2023: History

World War I, which lasted from 1914 to 1918, was an international conflict also referred to as the Great War or the First World War. It encompassed the majority of Europe, including Austria-Hungary, the United States, the Middle East, and Russia, in addition to Britain, France, Asia, and Germany. The Central Powers—Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Turkey—confronted the Allies—France, Great Britain, Russia, Italy, Japan, and, beginning in 1917, the United States—in the primary conflict of the war.

A Serb nationalist by the name of Gavrilo Princip murdered Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife in Sarajevo, Bosnia, starting the First World War. The death of the Archduke sparked tensions that had been accumulating in Europe for the previous two decades, which led to a rapidly escalating series of events that culminated in Germany’s invasion of neutral Belgium. Russia, Britain, and France all joined the conflict shortly thereafter.

November 11, 1918 marked the official conclusion of World War I, following four years of bloodshed, bombardment, and gunfire, when the Allies and Germany signed an armistice agreement that halted hostilities along the Western Front. Nine million soldiers were killed and twenty-one million were injured. Each of Great Britain, Germany, Russia, Austria-Hungary, and France lost at least one million lives. Furthermore, as a result of exposure, disease, atrocities, starvation, or military engagements, an estimated ten million civilians perished.
