A diesel engine is an internal combustion engine in which air is compressed to a temperature high enough to ignite diesel fuel injected into the cylinder, where combustion and expansion move a piston. It converts the chemical energy stored in the fuel into mechanical energy, which can be used to power heavy-duty vehicles and machinery, as well as to generate electricity in hospitals, industrial buildings, and residential homes.

Rudolf Diesel, an engineer, is credited with inventing this engine, for which he was granted a patent on February 23, 1893. He created the engine after attempting to improve the efficiency of the 1870s-era Otto engine, a large, single-cylinder, four-stroke engine.

It took considerable time and effort for Diesel’s invention to become a commercial success. Many engineers and developers joined the effort to increase the marketability of Rudolf Diesel’s invention.

Since then, the diesel engine has become an integral part of modern transportation and daily life. Adolphus Busch installed the first commercial engine using Diesel’s patent at his brewery in St. Louis, Missouri. In later years, diesel engines were used to power submarines during World War I and eventually all military vehicles and equipment during World War II.

In the 1920s and 1930s, high-speed diesel engines were introduced for commercial vehicle applications and passenger cars, respectively.
