There’s no denying the dimpled chads’ influence in American politics. During the 20th century, punched cards were one of the most widely used voting procedures. However, in 2000, its fate had undoubtedly run its course.
In the 2000 presidential contest, George W. Bush (R-FL) and Al Gore (D-TN) faced off. On November 7, 2000, as the day drew to a finish, every major news channel predicted that Al Gore would win. Bush was ahead in Florida by a few hundred votes, but the state had not yet announced a winner.
Voters in over thirty Florida counties cast their ballots using punched cards in the Votomatic fashion. Unfortunately, a large number of ballots were not punched correctly. Due to dimpled chads, which occur when a piece of paper remains attached to the cardboard even after being punched out, thousands of voter rolls had to be scrapped. Gore requested an automatic machine recount due to the close vote, and Bush filed an appeal with the Supreme Court. Six days after the election, the Supreme Court, of course, put an end to the recount and pronounced Bush the victor.
As one of the world’s oldest democracies still in operation, the United States has undoubtedly experienced its fair share of electoral disasters. We were raised on tales of the bitterly disputed vote total between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon, as well as the Chicago Tribune’s erroneous listing of “Dewey Defeats Truman”—which is now practically a meme.
January 4 is set aside for the public denunciation of the infamous punched card ballots, maybe because Congress convened on January 6, 2001, to formally declare Bush the winner of the 2000 presidential contest.
