Discovery Day shaped Haitian unity and resolve. The nation celebrates with street festivals, live performances, and eating every year.
Indigenous Taino communities existed on a huge Caribbean island in the 15th century. This island was called “Ayiti,” meaning “mountainous land.” This island was their home for millennia, but Christopher Columbus’ December 1492 landing changed everything. The Italian navigator discovered the New World while seeking Asia with Spanish royal sponsorship. The Taino population declined owing to colonialism and persecution by Spaniards in the Caribbean. Columbus renamed the island “La Isla Española,” eventually abbreviated to ‘Española.’
Spain disputed territory with France, which had colonized the region, by 1664. Saint-Domingue, in the west, was founded by France. The two governments split the island after many battles. Thus, France ruled the west and Spain the remainder. Hispaniola is the Latinized name of the island. Hispaniola became typical for describing the entire island in historical accounts and official letters.
The French Revolution in 1784 prompted free people of color in French-occupied ‘Hispaniola’ to fight the French. Though Napoleon Bonaparte’s army was powerful, the people won. Haiti was founded on January 1, 1804. The first sovereign Caribbean nation and the second New World republic after the US. Haiti was named after the island’s first peoples by revolutionary hero Jean-Jacques Dessalines.
