The background of Djibouti Independence Day

Djibouti is a country on the northeastern frontier of Africa. Due to the form of the region, it is also referred to as the Horn of Africa. Djibouti is a multiethnic country with a population of slightly more than 900,000. This is the tiniest population on the African continent. Somali is the official language, while Islam is the state religion. French and Arabic are also official national languages.

Djibouti’s history begins with the commencement of human history. Some Neolithic settlements are believed to have originated from the Nile valley. There are archaeological traces of pottery, agriculture, animal husbandry, and settlements. During those periods, the area experienced a different climate. It was inhabited by an abundance of flora and fauna.

The region’s mediaeval history dates back to 2500 B.C. It is believed to be the most probable location of Punt. The Punt is a location frequently mentioned in Egyptian history. The region is also said to have been ruled by Macrobians in 247 B.C. and the Kingdom of Adal between 900 and 1285 A.D., which introduced Islam to the continent. It was subsequently succeeded by the Ifat Sultanate (1285-1415), the Adal Sultanate (1415-1577), and the Ottoman Eyalet (1577-1867).

In 1888, the region came under French control. The entire region was referred to as Somaliland. Djibouti had become the capital of French Somaliland by 1892. Ethiopia subsequently acquired Djibouti following a treaty between France and Ethiopia. Djibouti became an independent republic in 1977.
