Edible Book Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

The first Edible Book Day occurred on April 1, 1755. Anthelme Brillat-Savarin was born into a family of lawyers in France. He chose to pursue the same career path as his father.

On April 1, Edible Book Day, also known as National Edible Book Festival, is observed. It was first observed in 2000 by Judith A. Hoffberg and Béatrice Coron to honour the birthday of the renowned gastronome Jean-Anthelme Brillat-Savarin, a French jurist and politician who is best known for his book “Physiologie du goût.”

On Edible Book Day, edible books are created, presented, photographed, and ingested. Typically, images and details of the event are published to social media platforms. The celebration brings together bibliophiles, gourmets, xenophiles, and the occasional bookworm. In addition to categories such as ‘Best Literary Pun’ and ‘Most Delicious Looking,’ the day is a chance to recognise both literary and culinary talents.

The background of Edible Book Day

The first Edible Book Day occurred on April 1, 1755. Anthelme Brillat-Savarin was born into a family of lawyers in France. He chose to pursue the same career path as his father. However, he was more interested in the culinary arts. Even though he hid behind politics and the law, he was a gourmet at heart.

In 1825, he published “The Physiology of Taste,” which became the gastronomes’ holy book. It contains a wealth of information on how to enhance the overall dining experience. Anthelme imparts his extensive knowledge through numerous anecdotes, random conversations, humorous narration, and profound observations.

There are scattered references to novel recipes and culinary treatises. Advance a few decades to the year 2000. Judith Holmberg, co-founder of Forbes Library in North Hampton, conceived of edible books during a Thanksgiving feast with book artists. The idea quickly became a global phenomenon.

People from numerous nations, including Canada, Australia, Brazil, England, India, Germany, Italy, and Japan, frequently attend consumable book events. The concept brings together bibliophiles, foodies, and artists for a single event.

The event organisers also award prizes for the best overall submission, the best phrase, the best book theme, the best children’s book, and the best adult book. The celebration focuses primarily on constructing edible books or book-inspired themes.

EDIBLE BOOK DAY ACTIVITIES

Participate in the edible book day

People can register for online access to these events, which are held annually. If you cannot locate any events, you can create your own.

Create a book that can be eaten and share your experience.

Choose a theme and your favourite book to create a delectable book. Document your entire procedure with photos and videos, then share them on social media.

Not creative? Then study

Not everyone is a natural-born culinary artist, and not everyone can create exquisite food shapes. This does not preclude your participation in the event. Join the reading corner and make the most of the day by perusing a fantastic book if you are unable to cook.

5 INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT “PHYSIOLOGIE DU GOUT”

The precise name of the book that inspired Edible Book Day is “Physiologie du goût; ou, méditations de gastronomie transcendante: ouvrage théorique, historique et à l’ordre du jour, 2 vol.”

Jean Anthelme once stated, “The discovery of a new dish brings humanity more joy than the discovery of a new star.”

We’re confident that everyone knows this quote. It’s also from Physiology of Taste.

M.F.K. Fisher translated the work into English and added editor’s notes and footnotes to each page.

Anthelme is widely regarded as the world’s first gastronome.
