Independence Day in El Salvador is on September 15. Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica participate because of the Act of Independence of Central America, which was ratified in Guatemala City in 1821. El Salvador is a country in Central America composed of mountains and flat lowlands that receives a great deal of precipitation. The country’s national flower is the yucca flower blossom, or Flor de izote. Playa Popoyo, Playa El Sunzal, and Playa El Tunco are three of El Salvador’s most famous beaches.

The background of El Salvador Independence Day

In 1522, the Spanish navigator Andrés Nio lead an expedition to Central America. Upon discovering Jiquilisco Bay and the Lempa River, he claimed the territory for Spain. This year marked the first documented European visit to what is now El Salvadorian territory. Conquistadors commanded by Pedro de Alvarado and his brother Gonzalo arrived in what is now the Republic of El Salvador shortly thereafter. They were initially dismayed to discover that the area was devoid of gold, but they discovered that the soil quality was exceptional.

Indigenous inhabitants of the region resisted the Spanish with vigour. Not until 1525 did the Spanish ultimately gain control over the region. In 1609, El Salvador joined the Kingdom of Guatemala, which included the present-day nations of Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Chiapas, Mexico.

Due to Spain’s participation in the Peninsular War, the administration of the country was weakened. In addition, local juntas were formed as Spanish civilians revolted against King Joseph Bonaparte, the brother of Napoleon Bonaparte, who was imposed by the French as the ruler of Spain. El Salvador exemplified the desire for autonomy in Central America, as its 1811 independence movement became renowned for its call for autonomy.

El Salvador proclaimed independence on September 15, 1821, when the Act of Independence of Guatemala declared Central American states independent from the Spanish Empire. The regions became part of the Mexican Empire until 1823, when they were ceded to the Federal Republic of Central America.
