No fan of a fantasy world is greater or more imaginative than any other, and today is all about embracing your passion for your favourite fandoms. In the Victorian era, the term “geek” was used to refer to circus performers. Prior to that, a geek was merely a ‘freak’ in English or a ‘fool’ in German. These eccentrics were exhibited in travelling freak shows and circuses, where they consumed the heads of live chickens and snakes.
Before the middle to late 20th century, the term ‘geek’ did not refer to someone who is obsessed with the fantasy worlds of superheroes and/or sorcery. And while those who were openly geeky were once subjected to swirlies and being shoved into lockers, the term has become popular and widely accepted as more and more people admit to being at least a little bit geeky.
The exact origins of Embrace Your Geekness Day are unknown, but Wellcat Holidays created it to commemorate all things geeky. Instead of allowing nerds to suffer for their devoted love of warlocks and wizards, superheroes and supervillains, Embrace Your Geekness Day is an opportunity to celebrate the geek within us all.
