In September 2017, former U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May declared it an official day. The day’s opening ceremony was held at Heaton Park in Manchester, England. Each year, it is typically conducted in a different location. People use the day, also known as 999 Day, to express gratitude to emergency personnel for their service. Included in emergency personnel are fire crews, doctors, paramedics, pilots, and even service animals who labour to protect the public.

Throughout the holiday, special educational events are conducted to teach the public about life-saving techniques.
