End of the World 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

The majority of Christian groups dismissed Harold Camping's predictions. Some congregations cited Matthew 24:36, in which Christ declares, "About that day or hour, nobody knows.

End of the World Day on May 21 commemorates the date that the end of the world was predicted to occur in 2011. Harold Camping, an American radio presenter and former president of the Family Radio Christian network, issued a biblically-based warning about the impending end of the world. He asserted that the rapture and the Day of Judgement would occur on May 21, 2011, the date Christians would ascend to heaven. In addition, he predicted that the end of the planet would occur five months later, on October 21. Camping stated that the date of the rapture would be May 21 “without a shadow of a doubt” and that the event would occur at 6 p.m. local time.

The background of End of the World

The majority of Christian groups dismissed Harold Camping’s predictions. Some congregations cited Matthew 24:36, in which Christ declares, “About that day or hour, nobody knows.” Church officials proceeded with their duties and scheduled their Sunday, May 22 church services as usual. Camping claimed he had spent decades mathematically calculating the Bible’s prophecies to support his arguments for the May 21 end of the world.

As a result of his prophecies, many of his followers quit their jobs, ceased investing in their children’s education, sold their homes, and even spent enormous sums promoting his end-of-the-world claims. In early May of 2011, approximately 7,000 ethnic Hmong Christians congregated in a desolate town in the province of in Biên, Vietnam. They intended to await Christ’s arrival. The administration of Vietnam dispersed the gathering. Numerous extremists were apprehended, while hundreds were executed by Vietnamese forces. The massacre was attributed to Camping’s false predictions.

On May 23, Camping refused to offer an apology for his previous interpretations. On May 21, 1988, the churches were judged; on September 7, 1994, the churches’ judgement continued; and on May 21, 2011, the entire planet was judged. Following the failure of the prediction, the media shifted its focus to Camping and his adherents for their responses. On May 23, Camping stated that May 21 was the Day of Judgement, and that after the physical rapture on October 21, 2011, God would annihilate the entire universe. Camping acknowledged in an interview on October 16 that he did not know when the end would occur. After October 21, when his foretold apocalypse failed to materialise, he declined to comment publicly.
