Purim is a celebration based on the narratives in the Book of Esther. The book’s historical accuracy is debatable, but the story it tells can inspire people. According to the book, King Ahasuerus was the ruler of the India-to-Egypt-spanning Persian Empire. Queen Vasthi was the king’s original queen. As a result of Vashti’s disobedience, the king decided to marry another woman. Therefore, he organised a beauty contest to find a new wife. Esther entered the competition without disclosing her Jewish heritage and won the king’s affection.
Mordechai, the cousin of Esther, was the leader of the Jewish people, while anti-Semitic Haman became prime minister. Mordechai disobeyed the king’s order to bow to Hamam, causing friction between the two men. Hamam persuaded the king to execute all Jews on the thirteenth day of the month of Adar. As soon as Mordechai learned of the execution order, he contacted Esther to help persuade the king. Esther was able to convince the king, and she even succeeded in having the prime minister executed. Mordechai was appointed as the new prime minister, and Hamam’s decree is revoked. Esther issued a royal decree authorising Jews to defend themselves against any aggressors.
The Jews were able to defeat their attackers on the thirteenth day of Adar and celebrate their victory on the fourteenth day of Adar. This is one of the most important Jewish celebrations.
