As far back as 12,000 years ago, humans have kept animals as companions. They provide an inexhaustible list of physical and emotional benefits to their guardians or “human parents.” The companionship of a canine or cat can improve one’s mood and help maintain happiness when anxiety or sadness sets in.

The relationship between humans and their pets has evolved into one that is mutually beneficial, with humans serving as custodians or providers and pets as companions and sometimes protectors. Both humans and animals have developed stronger relationships and bonds than with their own species. The discovery that a companion has disappeared can be devastating and terrifying for its owner. Similarly, a domesticated companion that wanders into unfamiliar territory can become erratic and aggressive. Annually, 6.3 million companion animals are taken to animal shelters, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (A.S.P.C.A.).

Every Day is Tag Day was established to ensure pets in shelters are returned to their owners, thereby reducing the number of animals euthanized in shelters due to overpopulation, aggression, or injury. The American Humane Society devised this day to make us more responsible for the safety of our pets; we are responsible for anything that threatens their welfare. Without proper and current identification, the fate of absent animals is typically predetermined. We must facilitate the identification and return of lost creatures.
