Everyone Writes Day 2023: Date, History, Facts

Clay tokens were used to record specified quantities of livestock or goods at the beginning of the pottery phase of the Neolithic.

In the United Kingdom, Everyone Writes Day is observed on October 21, but schools are encouraged to commemorate on a date that is more convenient for them. Even Science and Engineering Week, Arts Week, or the Summer Fair could coincide.
Primary and secondary schools alter their curricula for an entire day to honour all forms of writing. Every student and staff member, including kitchen staff, site supervisors, and parent volunteers, enjoys writing. Schools may choose to conduct a single large-scale writing event to engage all students, or they may opt for a series of playful and engaging writing activities.

The background of Everyone Writes Day

Clay tokens were used to record specified quantities of livestock or goods at the beginning of the pottery phase of the Neolithic. These tokens were imprinted on the surface of round clay envelopes, which were then used to retain them. The Kish tablet from Sumer, containing pictographic writing from 3500 B.C., may be the earliest documented piece of writing. The tokens were gradually supplanted with flat tablets on which symbols were inscribed using a stylus. At the end of the fourth millennium B.C., true writing is first documented in Uruk, and shortly thereafter in various regions of the Near East.

“Enmerkar and the Lord of Aratta,” an ancient Mesopotamian poem from around 1800 B.C., tells the first known story of the invention of writing: “Because the messenger’s mouth was heavy and he couldn’t repeat (the message), the lord of Kulaba patted some clay and wrote words on it, like a tablet. Before that, there had been no inscriptions on clay.”

The history of literature begins with the history of writing, but despite their connection, literature and writing are not identical. The earliest Sumerian writings do not, by any reasonable definition, constitute literature. Similarly esteemed are early Egyptian hieroglyphs and ancient Chinese government records. Scholars disagree as to when record-keeping transitioned into literature, but the earliest extant texts date back nearly a millennium to the beginning of recorded writing. The Egyptian Ptahhotep, who lived in the 24th century B.C., and the Sumerian Enheduanna, who lived in the 23rd century B.C., are among the earliest known authors.

Everyone Writes Day Activities

Provide kids with a writing prompt

You can accomplish this by providing them with a written prompt, or by going further with younger children. For example, you could create excitement by staging an extraterrestrial landing in the playground and assigning students the roles of reporters.

Create a collaborative narrative with the entire class

You can write the initial sentence or paragraph, then ask the first student on the list to continue it, followed by the next student, and so on. Everyone will be shocked by the story’s unexpected twists and turns.

Request that students rewrite their favourite tales

This is for elder children. You can instruct them to rewrite the piece from the perspective of another character, such as the antagonist, to alter the genre or setting.

EVERYONE WRITES DAY: 5 INTERESTING FACTS

This was the result of University of Sheffield research on writing in 2009.

It can simultaneously improve children’s innovation, creativity, and technical writing abilities.

Stanhope Primary School used virtual reality to investigate Kensington Palace without leaving the classroom in order to inspire students to write about it.

They suggest publishing an anthology of the children’s stories for the parents or people at the local store, for instance, and claim that having an actual audience has a positive effect on the exercise.

Moss Hey Primary School, for a two-day Everyone Writes Day project, produced and presented a television news programme in which each class represented a distinct department.
