We should thank State Representative Daniel Foley of Roswell for introducing House Bill 766, which established the day.
The second Tuesday of February is Extraterrestrial Culture Day, which falls on February 14 this year. According to the bill that established the day, it exists to “celebrate and honour all past, present, and future extraterrestrial visitors in ways that enhance relationships among all citizens of the cosmos, known and unknown.” On March 21, 2003, the legislature of New Mexico passed House Memorial 44, which establishes the holiday. Although Extraterrestrial Culture Day originated in New Mexico, it is now observed in locations far beyond its borders. Anyone interested in the enigma of the universe and extraterrestrial life can be observed celebrating the day.
We should thank State Representative Daniel Foley of Roswell for introducing House Bill 766, which established the day. The bill stipulated that the day be observed every second Thursday in February, but when the memorial was passed, the date was changed to every second Tuesday. According to the memorial, the day was created to honour extraterrestrials who have contributed to New Mexico’s international renown through their numerous and ongoing visits, sightings, and unsolved mysteries.
Also attributed to the existence of extraterrestrial life are technological advancements, experiments, and explorations. Hollywood has also been influenced by alien life, resulting in narratives that typically depict the achievements of alien beings across the universe. Sounds peculiar, right? Foley’s decision to introduce the day can be traced back to 1947, to a location approximately 75 miles from Roswell. Here, the rancher Mac Brazel discovered dirt in his sheep pasture.
He contacted the local sheriff after discovering taped-together metal sticks, heavy paper-like material that appeared glossy, and pieces of foil and plastic reflectors. The Roswell Army Force Base arrived at the scene with armoured trucks to remove the debris in response to a call from the sheriff.
On July 8, 1947, the front page of the Roswell Daily Record read, “RAAF Captures Flying Saucer on Ranch in Roswell Region.” The next day, the RAAF released a statement claiming that a weather balloon, not a flying saucer, had been discovered. However, witnesses to the debris have a different opinion. They believe that the debris resembled an alien flying saucer rather than a weather balloon.
