This year, Fakesgiving is celebrated on May 30 to honour the fact that family and friends can be celebrated at any random moment, or as a satirical parody of the Thanksgiving holiday. A meal is prepared, family and friends are present, everyone gathers around a table and expresses what they’re ‘fakesful’ for, and everyone generally has fun and creates memories with one another. The values and atmosphere of Thanksgiving are not precisely replicated on Fakesgiving, but there is the unmistakable gathering of friends and family for the purpose of having fun.

The background of Fakesgiving

The creation of Fakesgiving was necessitated by a global pandemic that kept everyone indoors for extended periods. It is a relatively recent holiday about which little is known, but its origins can be traced to Thanksgiving. The origins of the Thanksgiving holiday in North America can be traced back to English customs that predate the Protestant Reformation. Thanksgiving also contains elements of harvest festivals, despite the fact that the harvest season in New England occurs well before November, when the holiday is celebrated.

The English Reformation, which occurred during Henry VIII’s tenure, elevated the significance of special thanksgiving religious services. Prior to 1536, England had 95 church holidays in addition to the 52 Sundays on which church attendance and work cessation were mandated. As a result of the 1536 reforms of the Church of England and Puritan Sabbatarianism, the church holidays were replaced by days regarded as special Days of Fasting and Days of Thanksgiving in response to events considered to be acts of special providence.

As a consequence of events regarded as divine blessings, days of thanksgiving were mandated, and these were observed through Christian church services and other gatherings. Following the victory over the Spanish Armada in 1588 and the liberation of Queen Anne in 1605, two days of thanksgiving were proclaimed. In 1606, following the failure of the Gunpowder Plot in 1605, a special annual Day of Thanksgiving was instituted; this became the basis for Guy Fawkes Day on November 5. Following the safe landfall of English colonists in Virginia’s Berkeley Hundred in 1619, their charter mandated that they say thanksgiving prayers annually.
