Fasching 2023: Date, History, Facts about Fasching

The German Carnival period known as Fasching is also known as the 'fifth season,' and it is currently regarded as a festival celebrating the end of winter.

Fasching, which occurs on February 28, is a religious celebration that brings joy, merriment, parades, costumes, and a chance to break free from routine. Beginning in mid-November and lasting until February, Fasching concludes with a bang. Yes, we are referring to a Karneval where people go all out for the festivities. On the day of Karneval, you can dress up and don a mask, dance in the streets, participate in a comedic skit, or attend a masquerade ball! The purpose is to rebel against oppressive rulers by having as much fun as possible.

The background of Fasching

The German Carnival period known as Fasching is also known as the ‘fifth season,’ and it is currently regarded as a festival celebrating the end of winter. However, this was not the original reason Fasching was celebrated. Since pre-Roman times, the festival has been celebrated as a time when people could be free and enjoy their lives. This means that all they had to do was organise activities centred on having fun. However, the ‘fun’ factor was not limited to organising carnivals. During the Middle Ages, the festival was used to make fun of the region’s oppressive rulers and highlight their flaws. This is why all carnival attendees wore costumes and masks to conceal their identities. If they were caught making fun of the rulers, they would be executed.

Intriguing festival customs include giving the city’s keys to a council of fools or allowing women to rule for the day. In certain areas, a parade honouring women began to be held.

The festival begins on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of the year. However, celebrations occur once winter has ended. The Rose Monday parade is one of the most significant events during Fasching. Tuesday is the last Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans. It is also important to note that Christians predominantly observe Fasching.
