With the assistance of Donald Kalpokas, John Bani, and other islanders, Father Lini founded the New Hebrides Cultural Association in order to bring about political reform and expel colonial forces. Through his association, he disseminated articles that raised public awareness of the significance of independence and ignited the populace’s minds. This group eventually morphed into a political movement that spawned the New Hebrides National Party, also known as the Vanua’aku Pati.

In 1980, in response to nationwide freedom movements, the country achieved independence. Father Lini was elected party leader and sworn in as Vanuatu’s first prime minister on July 30, 1980. Because Vanuatu means “Our land forever,” he chose it as the nation’s name. Father Lini worked there until 1991 and died there in 1999. Therefore, on February 21 of each year, people attend memorial services and other special events to honour Father Lini.
