Father's Day

Every year, Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June. Where would we be if not for fathers? Who would flaunt ‘dad jeans,’ repeat the same mildly amusing Thanksgiving quips, or retell those endearing childhood tales? Of course, there is much more to fathers than their fashion sense and unending nostalgia for the “good old days” (we get it, Elton John, David Bowie, and Queen). Still, fathers are heroes. Be sure to tell your father how much he means to you on June 18.

The background of Father’s Day

Far from being a “Hallmark holiday,” Father’s Day has its roots in mediaeval Europe, when Catholics established a day to honour fathers, paternity, and all paternal relationships. A few centuries later, paternal’s Day became a worldwide celebration, demonstrating the significance of fathers and paternal figures in all societies. However, use caution. The date varies around the globe. In Spain, it occurs on March 19, while in New Zealand it falls on the first Sunday of September. Consider this if you are travelling or if you have family residing abroad. Few things are more distressing than a disappointed father.

The complex history of Father’s Day in the United States dates back to the turn of the 20th century. To truly comprehend Father’s Day, however, we must look back to the post-Civil War reconstruction era of the 1860s and a holiday honouring mothers, the other half of the parenting dyad.

Ann Reeves Jarvis is the originator of the tradition of celebrating parents. Shortly after the Civil War, Jarvis chose a day to honour the mothers of both Confederate and Union combatants in order to heal the wounds caused by four years of bitter conflict in a divided West Virginia town. Known as “Mother’s Work Days,” Jarvis hoped that during the newly appointed era of peace and reconciliation, former enemies could begin to sow new seeds of unity by celebrating something they all shared.

FATHER’S DAY ACTIVITIES

Make him sense valued.

One of the best methods to celebrate is to express your appreciation for him. In the days or weeks leading up to Father’s Day, create a list of his daily contributions to the household. Then, on Father’s Day, let him know how much you value these modest gestures and that they are not overlooked. Even better, take on these responsibilities or activities for the day and allow him to rest and luxuriate in the glow of family appreciation.

Celebrate a family day

Despite the fact that it is Father’s Day, what fathers want most in the end is time with the entire family. Discuss with dad his thoughts on a family excursion, and select an activity that everyone, regardless of age, can enjoy. This will provide him with many memories and tales to share at future family gatherings; what more could he want?

Find a gift with significance.

Undoubtedly, a new weed trimmer would make him happy, but there is always place for creativity when it comes to gift-giving. A meaningful gift, as opposed to a practical one, may be a welcome change this year. It is always a good idea to give your father a gift that demonstrates your gratitude for his presence in your life and the lessons he has taught you.

5 THINGS DADS LIKE TO DO

Play golf

We believe that fathers enjoy golf because it takes place on a massive landscape that they don’t have to mow, or because they unleash their inner speed demon while zipping around the course on those electric golf carts.

Channel cruising

They must alternate between “NCIS” and reruns of “CSI Miami” and “Law & Order” because they are never satiated with just one episode.

Calling at inopportune moments

Dads adore to call at the worst possible times (either by phone or from the bottom of the stairs in a loud, booming voice).

Telling horrible puns

This is one thing that dads do that we love to hate (but secretly love to adore) — dad jokes are typically composed of the best/worst puns you’ve ever encountered.

Grilling

Fire appeals to their primal desire to provide for the family, and while we know that fathers are adept in the kitchen, their true passion is outdoor cooking.
