Feast of St. Agatha History

Twice a year, in August and February, people celebrate the Feast of Saint Agatha. Because of her extreme devotion to Saint Agatha, she is now acknowledged as everyone’s patron saint and protector.

The Calendar of Carthage, the martyrology of St. Jerome, and other cited texts all refer St. Agatha. The details of her martyrdom have little historical significance, even though she was one of the most venerated virgin martyrs in Christianity. Her birthplace is disputed between Catania and Palermo, and both of her parents were socially esteemed nobility. The tradition also makes it clear that she is seen as deriving from a wealthy family. Mary refused the persistent advances of a Roman prefect whom Emperor Decius had sent to take control of Sicily at a young age and instead gave her virginity and life to God.

Because of her unwavering devotion to her faith and refusal of the Roman Prefect, she was imprisoned and subjected to terrible torture since the Prefect saw it as an insult. Figures and photos of her reflect that she had her breasts amputated. In her visions, while she was imprisoned, St. Peter the Apostle consoled her and used his prayers to cure her wounds and sorrow. Although there was a plan to burn her at the stake, reports indicate that an earthquake caused the populace to demonstrate in favor of her release. Agatha was incarcerated once again and perished while being held captive.
