The figure of St. Giusto is now inside a clear plexiglass cylinder that is full of water to represent his death on the cross.
Feast of St. Giusto 2023: The public holiday for the Feast of San Giusto is November 2. Trieste is in northeastern Italy, and San Giusto, also known as Saint Justus of Trieste, is the city’s patron saint. Among the towns in Sicily that honor him are Albona (Istria), San Giusto Canavese, and Misilmeri. The party doesn’t happen until the next day because of religious reasons. That’s why the feast is on November 3.
Around the end of the year 200, the Roman Emperors started to be very harsh on Christians. People used to think that the emperors were a harmless group, but then they started to bother and kill people who wouldn’t give up their views.
A lot of these early Christian martyrs were made saints, and on their feast days, people all over Europe held celebrations to honor their favorite or patron saints.
From 284 to 305 A.D., when Emperor Diocletian was in charge, Justus lived near Trieste and became a Christian. Most people in the town knew about Justus’ strange faith but didn’t care about it.
Even though he had a great name, or maybe because of it, he was brought before the Roman authorities and accused of doing things that were against the law. The Emperor ordered all Christians to offer sacrifices to the gods, and anyone who didn’t risked death.
The governor of the area, Mannacio, called Justus and told him he had to make a sacrifice to the Roman gods of the pagan religion. Justus denied. To get Justus to change his mind, Mannacio had him beaten and put in jail.
He was put on trial by Roman law. He was found guilty and given the death penalty by drowning because he wouldn’t let the Roman gods have his body. Local legends say that he was thrown off of a small boat into the Gulf of Trieste, not far from where the Promontory of Sant’Andrea is now.
Sebastian, the priest, had a dream the night before Justus died that his body had washed up on the shore, even though there were weights on it to keep it in place. Sebastian got together with other Christians to find his body, which they did and found at “Riva Grumula.” Justus was buried on the beach where his body was found.
In the late 500s, his body was moved to a hill, and a Christian church was built there in his honor.
Trieste has a lot of tasty foods, like boiled meat, goulash, sausages, and the famous cooked ham. Because it shares a lot of history with Austrian and Hungarian cuisines, you can expect to see foods like horseradish and cabbage.
In Christianity, the most important ideas are Christ’s death and rising, and martyrdom is a form of those. This is why people love hearing about devoted Christians like St. Giusto.
Most heroes gain admiration from their followers and serve as inspiration and sources of strength when times are tough. The idea of martyrs is very important in many religions.
