In Nicaragua, Fiesta de Santiago is celebrated on July 25. It is the most important religious celebration performed in honour of the Apostle Santiago. Numerous individuals participate in the celebrations, which occur annually in the country. Typically, the festival celebrations commence on July 19 and conclude on July 28. During the festival, you can witness the religious fervour of the settlers through their processions. The image, which is paraded on a white horse and recalls the battle between the Apostle Santiago and the Moors, is part of the tradition. People sing traditional songs and dance to philharmonic ensembles’ music.

It typically incorporates novenas of masses, prayers, and Holy Rosary candles. In addition, there are numerous entertaining activities, such as traditional bullfights, ribbon contests, and a folk funfair. People can also partake in craft fairs, pet parades, and dance parties. On various dates throughout the year, these celebrations are held in communities of the municipality in honour of patron saints. These saints include the Virgin of Fátima and Saint Rafael the Archangel in Puerto Sandino. Also honoured are San José in Calle de Los Besos and Santo Domingo in La Trinidad and Copaltepe.

Numerous communities in Nicaragua host religious festivals. During the Liberal uprising of 1896, General Zelaya defeated his adversaries at Nagarote. He was assisted and protected by Santiago, the patron saint. Santiago Apóstol was given the soldier’s uniform, the rank epaulettes, and the distinctive sabre of power and authority by General Zelaya. He gave him the rank of captain general. The original characteristic of the revered image is donning a military uniform. Typically, the image of the patron saint is received with great enthusiasm.

In 1993, the notion arose to create replicas of indigenous objects using the legendary tree’s wood. Sculptures of Cacique Nagrandano in his natural stature and Indita de Nagarote were among the objects created. During the colonial period, they also produced pre-Columbian vessels and weapons used by the Indians and the Spanish.
