Fintastic Friday 2023: Date, History, Facts about Sharks

In order to give sharks, skates, and rays a voice, the second Friday of May was designated Fintastic Friday in 2015. It was founded by Ruth Musgrave's organisation Whale Times, which was founded in 1995 to connect children with the ocean.

It is time to observe Fintastic Friday, which occurs on the second Friday of every May month. This year’s event will occur on. This special day focuses on Elasmobranchii, a subclass of cartilaginous fish that includes sharks, rays, skates, and sawfish. These aquatic organisms have five to seven pairs of gill clefts that open independently, rigid dorsal fins, and minute placoid epidermis scales. Ruth Musgrave, the founder and director of Whale Times, created Fintastic Friday, which promotes shark, ray, skate, and sawfish conservation initiatives.

The background of Fintastic Friday

In order to give sharks, skates, and rays a voice, the second Friday of May was designated Fintastic Friday in 2015. It was founded by Ruth Musgrave’s organisation Whale Times, which was founded in 1995 to connect children with the ocean. Fintastic Friday aims to promote awareness and advocacy for the conservation of elasmobranchs. This subclass of cartilaginous fish contains sharks, rays, skates, and sawfish.

Musgrave believes that caring children are the future of sharks because no one is noisier or more enthusiastic than they are. Not only do they want children from around the globe to disseminate the message of shark conservation, but they also want them to honour and raise awareness of sharks daily. The team behind Whale Times and its mission to provide children with simple access to marine science information was motivated by a desire to raise awareness and advocate for conservation efforts to preserve some of the ocean’s most magnificent creatures. Their mission is also to connect the ocean, ocean research, researchers, and students through formal and informal educational programmes. Today, educators, marine scientists, and other scientific organisations admire the organisation for inspiring students to pursue careers in marine science and work to safeguard our ocean environments.

As the director of Whale Times, Musgrave believes that the public’s perception of sharks should be altered, as their survival is essential to the survival of all aquatic species. She believes that they require a new voice, which she believes children can provide. It encourages them to participate in shark conservation efforts and helps transform the public’s perception of sharks from dread to appreciation and from hatred to love, as it should be for all of nature’s creatures.

5 FINTASTIC FACTS ABOUT SHARKS

Their cartilaginous skeletons are significantly lighter than bone, and their large livers are full with low-density oils, which contribute to their buoyancy.

Because shark skin is composed of microscopic tooth-like structures known as placoid scales, also known as cutaneous denticles, it has the texture of sandpaper.

Some sharks have a spiracle that enables them to draw water into their respiratory system while at rest, but the majority must continue to swim in order to pump water over their gills.

There are two categories of shark species: oviparous (laying eggs) and viviparous (giving birth to live young).

The majority of sharks have good low-light vision, exceptional night vision, and colour discrimination.
