Bhutan observes The First Sermon Of Lord Buddha, also known as ‘Drukpa Tshe Zhi,’ as a non-working holiday. As its name implies, Drukpa Tshe Zhi commemorates the first sermon delivered by Lord Buddha in the Deer Park of Isipatana, India, over 2,500 years ago. The sermon also symbolises the establishment of the Buddhist’sangha’ or monkhood.’
The background of First Sermon Of Lord Buddha
Siddhartha Gautama was a member of the aristocratic Shakya dynasty during the reign of Bimbisara, the ruler of the Magadha empire, and was born in Lumbini, India. According to the legend, the sheltered young man ventured beyond the walls of his palace and, upon witnessing the reality of the suffering beyond aristocratic opulence, renounced his social position and adopted an ascetic lifestyle. After many years of meditation and mendicancy, he is believed to have attained enlightenment — the knowledge and comprehension of the cycle of life and death, as well as how to live a ‘good life’ of moderation.
His first sermon, entitled “Setting the Wheel of Dhamma in Motion,” was delivered in the Deer Park of Isipatana, India, over 2,500 years ago. In this sermon, Gautama outlined the ‘Four Noble Truths’ — the existence of suffering, the cause of suffering, the fact that the cause of suffering can be eliminated, and the path to the elimination of suffering — and the ‘Noble Eightfold Path’ — the right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration. Following this path would enable one to escape suffering and achieve ‘nirvana.’
After his passing, Gautama became known as Buddha, which means “The Awakened One.”
