National Flag Day is annually observed on June 26 in Romania. In 1998, the national day was instituted. “The flag of Romania is tricolour; the colours are arranged vertically in the following order from the flagpole: blue, yellow, and red.” The origins of the Romanian national symbol can be traced back to 1821, during the Wallachian uprising, when the revolutionary flag featured all three colours.
National Flag Day was instituted in Romania in 1998. “The flag of Romania is tricolour; the colours are arranged vertically in the following order from the flagpole: blue, yellow, and red.” Law no. 75 of July 16, 1994, published in Monitorul Oficial no. 237 of August 26, 1994, specifies flag colours, proportions, protocols, and exact hues, which are cobalt blue, chromium yellow, and vermilion red.
The origins of the Romanian national symbol can be traced back to 1821, during the Wallachian uprising, when the revolutionary flag featured all three colours. The tricolour was adopted in Wallachia, a historical former independent principality in Romania, in 1834 by domnitor Alexandru II Ghica, who submitted designs to Sultan Mahmud II for his approval. During this period, the flag was red, blue, and yellow with a bird’s visage and stars in the centre. In 1848, the revolutionaries once again adopted a horizontal tricolour of blue, yellow, and red for Wallachia. Each colour was assigned a meaning, with sky blue representing liberty, field yellow representing justice, and blood-red signifying brotherhood.
Between 1859 and 1866, the United Principalities of Wallachia and Moldavia used a horizontal tricolour of red, yellow, and blue. The colours were arranged vertically, and the country’s coat of arms was set in the centre of the flag in 1867. On December 30, 1947, when Romania was declared a socialist people’s republic, kingdom symbols were outlawed and the coat of arms was substituted with the country’s emblem. In 1989, Decree-Law No. 2 of December 27, 1989 stipulated that “the national flag is the traditional tricolour of Romania, with the colours arranged vertically in the following order, beginning at the flagpole: blue, yellow, red.”
