The First Continental Congress was convened in 1774 due to rising tensions between the British administration and the United States. The Second Continental Congress was convened in 1775 in response to the invasion of Massachusetts.

The 14th of June is U.S. Flag Day, and we are here to show you how to celebrate in the best manner possible. Did you realise that 245 years have passed since the United States flag was adopted by the Second Continental Congress? Flag Day is not an official federal holiday. However, the United States commemorates the day with parades that attract tens of thousands of spectators from across the country and other nations. Americans fly the national flag in front of their residences to commemorate this holiday.

The background of Flag Day

The First Continental Congress was convened in 1774 due to rising tensions between the British administration and the United States. The Second Continental Congress was convened in 1775 in response to the invasion of Massachusetts. The Olive Branch Petition was sent to King George III as a last-ditch effort to avoid conflict. George Washington was named commander-in-chief of the Continental Army.

Thomas Jefferson and his fellow members of the Congress committee composed the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Then, on June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress passed the Flag Act. This day began to be observed as Flag Day in the United States. In the years that followed (1794 and 1818), additional Flag Acts altered the design of the flag.

In 1864, George Morris is credited with organising the first Flag Day celebration. In 1885, dentist Bernard J. Cigrand organised a formal Flag Day observance at Stony Hill School in Waubeka, Wisconsin, which became the first widely recognised Flag Day celebration. In recognition of his efforts to raise awareness of Flag Day’s significance, Bernard J. Cigrand was bestowed the title “Father of Flag Day.” President Franklin D. Roosevelt held United Flag Day in 1942 in an effort to strengthen connections between the Allied forces. National Flag Week is observed in the second week of June.
