The Floral Design Day was created to honour Carl Rittner, the pioneer responsible for the development and global expansion of floral arts, and to celebrate the beautiful art form of floral design. Rittner’s birthday, February 28, 1914, is annually observed as Floral Design Day in the United States.
The origins of floral designs can be traced back to ancient Egypt, where tomb paintings, etchings, and carvings depict lotus blossom and bud bouquets. Therefore, there is no doubt that this art form has been practised by humans since ancient times.
Rittner’s interest in floral arts sparked the expansion of floral designs. He attended Boston University, where he earned a Master of Education. In 1947, he founded Rittner’s School of Floral Design in an effort to spread this art throughout the world. In 1995, Governor William F. Weld of Massachusetts proclaimed February 28 Floral Design Day.
His school has taught students from all over the world the various shapes and forms of floral designs since its founding. They specialise in floral design instruction and are authorised by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Today, floral design has expanded into a multibillion-dollar industry that includes floral arrangements for special events, bouquets for weddings and holidays, and many others; Rittner’s contribution is appreciated by a great number of people. Consequently, this day is dedicated to honouring and celebrating the art, beauty, and grace of floral arrangements and those who have contributed to the development of this distinctive art form.
