The background of Founding Anniversary of the Senate

The Philippines are a Southeast Asian archipelago surrounded by the western Pacific Ocean. The country’s maritime borders are shared with China, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Palau, Japan, and Taiwan. It consists of approximately 7,640 islands organised into three major divisions: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. The Philippines is the thirteenth most populous country in the globe, with approximately 109 million inhabitants. Geographically, the nation is located in an earthquake zone, but it is also one of the most recently industrialised cities with a rich cultural heritage and biodiversity.

About 777,000 years ago, the first humans arrived the islands of the Philippines. The skeletal remains of animals, such as a rhinoceros, discovered in Rizal in Kalinga are significant archaeological evidence that assisted the research team in determining the Philippines’ prehistory. During the 12th century, the island’s culture and economy flourished tremendously, and a significant number of coastal settlements and trade centres emerged. The colonisation began officially in 1565 with the arrival of the Spanish explorer Miguel López de Legazpi from Mexico; between 1762 and 1764, the country was briefly occupied by the British. In 1898, when the Spanish-American War began, Spain granted the Philippines independence. The very next year, on January 21, the First Philippine Republic was established, only to steadily disintegrate under American rule.

On August 29, 1916, the United States passed the Philippine Autonomy Act, establishing an elected, bicameral Philippine legislature with the Senate as the upper session. The act, commonly known as the Jones Law, served as the nation’s constitution until 1934. In addition to establishing a fully elected and stable government to supplant American rule in the Philippines, the Jones Act helped the island achieve independence. In 1935, the Senate was momentarily abolished, but it was reinstated in 1941.
