The background of Founding of Asuncion in Paraguay

Asuncion is Paraguay’s capital and largest metropolis in South America. The city is situated on the east branch of the Paraguay River, close to where the river meets the Pilcomayo. It is the longest continuously inhabited territory in the Rio de la Plata Basin and one of the oldest cities in South America. Because of this, it is known as “The Mother of Cities.”

On his journey north up the Paraguay River in search of a passage to the mines of Alto Peru (modern-day Bolivia), the Spanish conquistador Juan de Ayolas may have made his first visit to the site of the city. Later, Juan de Salazar y Espinosa and Gonzalo de Mendoza went in search of Ayolas, but they were unsuccessful. In August 1537, Salazar decided to establish a fort in a bay on the left bank of the river where he encountered friendly natives during a brief resupply halt. He titled it Our Lady of the Assumption (Nuestra Seora Santa Mara de la Asunción). The natives destroyed Buenos Aires in 1542, and the Spanish fled to Asuncion. As a result, the city became the centre of a vast Spanish colonial province that included sections of Brazil, modern Paraguay, and northeastern Argentina: the enormous Province of the Indies.

Since the independence of Paraguay, significant developments have occurred in Asuncion. During the reign of Gaspar Rodriguez de Francia, streets and highways were constructed and named throughout the city. During the presidency of Carlos Antonio López, however, Asuncion (and Paraguay) advanced further due to the implementation of new economic policies.
