Fountain Pen Day 2023: The first Friday of November is Fountain Pen Day. This year, it’s November 3. It began in 2012 and is a day set aside to celebrate and encourage people to use fountain pens and just enjoy writing in general. Many companies and organizations around the world support the day, and it is common for businesses that do support the day to run sales and deals on or before the day. The goal of the day is to bring attention to the beauty of writing with stylish tools and the fun of writing creatively in a stylish way.
In the year 3,000 B.C., the Egyptians used the first type of fountain pen. The name for these was styluses. To write, they used reed straw and ink made of soot and vegetable gum. Because you dipped them in ink, they were called “dip pens.” Over many hundreds of years, “reservoir pens,” or pens that could hold their ink, were made. Starting in 953, these were used. During the 17th and 18th centuries, metal writing pens were talked about.
Shiels were first used to make marks on stones. The Egyptians then used pieces of papyrus reed to make cuneiform shapes or charcoal to write words on birch bark or leaf. In the end, different kinds of plants and even iron were used to make ink. To use ink now, you needed new tools. Quills, which are big, stiff feathers from birds’ wings or tails, were used. To draw up the ink and put it on the paper, writers used a nib that was carefully cut. Because this could get messy, blotting paper was used to clean up any ink that got on the paper. The need for a faster way to put ink on paper grew over time. In 1636, Petrache Poenaru from Romania invented the fountain pen. He put together a pen with a metal tip that didn’t need to be cut all the time and a reservoir for ink.
To promote the use of fountain pens in everyday life and revive handwriting in general, fountainpenday.org established Fountain Pen Day in 2012. There are deals today that make it easy for people who have never used a fountain pen before to try one, or for people who already love them to get a better one or add to their collection. Even though fountain pens aren’t the most common way to write these days, they are still used for official documents and are sometimes seen as status symbols.
Fountain pens can be used for more than just writing. For artistic reasons, like expressive handwriting and calligraphy, pen and ink art, and professional art and design.
Not only can the meanings of words be very beautiful and unique, but so can the way the letters look. These beautiful parts of words look their best when written with fountain pens.
Fans of fountain pens can meet and talk to each other at shows and hangouts. Today is the perfect time to meet new people and learn new things.
