Frankenstein Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

Mary Shelley's 1818 novel "Frankenstein" is regarded as one of the most influential works of science fiction ever written. It relates the story of Victor Frankenstein, a young scientist who is fascinated by the creation of life.

The 30th of August is Frankenstein Day, and we are celebrating with every aspect of this classic novel. It’s been more than two centuries since the original “Frankenstein” story was published. Two centuries have passed since a youthful scientist named Victor Frankenstein gave life to his own creation, the monster. And led to innumerable Halloweens of young children with box-shaped foreheads covered in green paint. Let’s plunge into this festive occasion!

The background of Frankenstein Day

Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel “Frankenstein” is regarded as one of the most influential works of science fiction ever written. It relates the story of Victor Frankenstein, a young scientist who is fascinated by the creation of life. He conducts an experiment in which he is able to give life to a creature, subsequently dubbed “the monster,” using a variety of human body parts. The narrative then follows Victor and the monster as they search for the secret to happiness and harmony.

The novel garnered mixed reviews when it was first published. As a female author, Mary Shelley struggled to obtain respect and acceptance from some of her male contemporaries. However, as time has passed, particularly since the middle of the 20th century, “Frankenstein” has received largely favourable reviews. It is regarded as one of the most influential works in gothic, science fiction, and romantic literature.

Almost immediately after its publication, “Frankenstein” was adapted for a variety of mediums. On the basis of the scientist and his creature, theatres and opera houses would perform spectacular musicals and plays. As film and television gained popularity in the 20th century, the number of “Frankenstein” adaptations increased.

In the 1930s, the films “Bride of Frankenstein” and its sequel “Son of Frankenstein” contributed to the legend of Frankenstein. While some stories would adhere more closely to Mary Shelly’s source material, others would introduce new dimensions to the Frankenstein universe, such as time travel, superhuman abilities, and world dominance.

DAY OF FRANKENSTEIN ACTIVITIES

Peruse the book!

You probably haven’t read the original text since 10th grade English. The 30th of August is an excuse to break open a classic and travel to the 18th century and the mind of Victor Frankenstein. At 280 pages, it is a comparatively short read that can be completed in a few days.

Get an early start on Halloween preparations.

There are still eight weeks until Halloween, and what better way to celebrate than by donning the monster’s costume? Find a friend and coordinate going as both Victor and his foe together. The two months of preparation will give you ample time to design the ideal Halloween costume.

Bake some bread

These days, cookies and cakes shaped like Frankenstein are all the fashion. If you have a favourite form of dessert, we can guarantee that there is a Frankenstein-themed recipe for it. Internet resources are available for ginger biscuits, birthday cakes, and licorice. If you want to recreate a gothic or science fiction atmosphere while baking, you should dim the lights and play some eerie music.

5 FRANKENSTEIN FACTS THAT WILL BLOW YOUR MIND

William Goldwin, Mary Shelly’s father, was a prominent writer, and Mary Wollstonecraft, her mother, was a philosopher and feminist.

Victor attends Ingolstadt University, where he develops an interest in science and the origin of life.

This has changed over time, but Shelley originally characterises the monster as being greater than 3.5 metres (over 11 feet) tall.

In popular culture, Frankenstein’s monster has green skin, but in Mary Shelley’s original work, he is described as having yellow skin.

The 1970s musical was a derivative of Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein”; it pokes fun at early- and mid-twentieth-century horror films while incorporating a few characters and themes from the original novel.
