Freedom and Democracy Day in Chad: History

As the fifth president of Chad, Habré came to power in 1982. He then led the country through eight years of oppression and serious abuse of power. He regularly broke people’s rights, spied on them through secret police services, and tortured and killed his opponents.

At the end of 1989, there was a revolt against Habré’s cruel rule. By December 1, 1990, he was out of power and the Chadian National Armed Forces (FANT) were already broken up.

On December 3, 1990, General Déby’s Patriotic Salvation Movement (M.P.S.), a rebel organization with Libyan support, rammed into N’Djamena, the capital of Chad. M.P.S. troops got into Chad three weeks ago by crossing the border from Sudan.

After being removed from power, Habré ran away to Senegal with $11 million in state funds. He had to stay at home from 2005 until the Senegalese police caught him in 2013. He was president of Chad for eight years and is said to have killed about 40,000 people. During that time, he was accused of war crimes and torture. A committee in Chad also says that more than 40,000 people were killed and more than 200,000 were tortured. Human Rights Watch says that 1,200 people were killed and 12,000 were tortured.

It took three months for the provisional government to be accepted in Chad. On February 28, 1991, Déby became president after the charter was signed. He ran for office 30 times, winning every time. He did this for 30 years, until his death in 2021.
